את הרווח התפעולי ניתן לחשב לאחר שיש לנו את הרווח הגולמי. הרווח התפעולי הוא הרווח שנוצר לעסק בניכוי כל ההוצאות שאינן קשורות בהוצאות המכר. כך, מנכים מתוך הרווח הגולמי את ההוצאות שקשורות בשיווק, מחקר ופיתוח, הוצאות הקשורות במכירה והוצאות המוגדרות כהנהלה וכלליות (הוצאות אלו כוללות הוצאות משרדיות, משכורות להנהלה, הוצאות אחזקת מבנה ההנהלה, ריהוט, תקשורת, נסיעות ועוד).
אם לפשט את ההסבר בדוגמה – ניקח עסק לייצור מזון לחתולים. המכירות השנתיות של אותו העסק הסתכמו בכ-2 מיליון שקל. ממכירות אלו ננקה את עלות חומרי הגלם, עלות שכר העובדים, פחת על מכונות הייצור, ארנונה, חשמל ושאר הוצאות המכר בסך של 750,000, מכאן יוצא שהרווח הגולמי הוא 1.25 מיליון שקל. מהרווח הגולמי ננקה הוצאות שיווק של 100,000 שקל והוצאות הנהלה וכלליות בסך 300,000 שקל, ומכאן יוצא שהרווח התפעולי הוא – 850,000 שקל.
חישוב הרווח התפעולי עוזר לבעל/ת העסק להבין האם העסק יכול להתקיים בניכוי כלל ההוצאות השוטפות שלו. לכן, הרווח התפעולי משקף את היעילות הכוללת של התפעול העסקי, ולא רק את היעילות של תהליך הייצור (כפי שהרווח הגולמי משקף). הוא מראה עד כמה העסק מצליח לנהל את כל ההיבטים התפעוליים שלו בצורה רווחית.
לאחר שמקבלים את הרווח התפעולי, ניתן לחשב את הרווח התפעולי לאחר הוצאות מימון. הוצאות המימון הן למשל ריביות על הלוואות שהעסק לקח, הפרשי הצמדה ועוד. הרווח התפעולי לאחר הוצאות מימון מראה מה תזרים המזומנים של החברה.
